October is more than just pumpkin spice lattes and falling leaves; it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's a time when communities around the world come together to raise awareness about breast cancer, show support for those affected by the disease, and promote early detection. Here at Patti Nelson Luxury Group, this cause holds a special place in our hearts. In 2018, Patti’s sister, Juli, bravely faced a breast cancer diagnosis. Thanks to early detection, we are delighted to say that Juli has been cancer-free for the past six years!
There are numerous ways to get involved and make a meaningful impact this October. Here is some important information about breast cancer, early detection and some fantastic organizations where you can donate to support Breast Cancer research!
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in North America.
Mammograms remain the best screening test for most women. It takes an x-ray image of the breast and can find breast cancers when they are small and less likely to spread. The goal of screening tests is to find cancer at an early stage when it can be treated and hopefully cured.
Mammography and early detection has helped to reduce breast cancer deaths by 1/3 since 1990.
Know the Symptoms:
a breast lump or thickening, often without pain
change in size, shape or appearance of the breast
dimpling, redness, pitting or other changes in the skin
change in nipple appearance or the skin surrounding the nipple (areola)
abnormal or bloody fluid from the nipple
In 2023, an estimated 300,590 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States.
297,790 of those women and 2,800 of those men.
Mammography reduces your risk of dying of breast cancer by 40%.
Research shows that lifestyle changes can decrease the risk of breast cancer, even in women at high risk. To lower your risk:
Limit alcohol
Maintain a healthy weight
Be physically active
Breast-feed
Limit postmenopausal hormone therapy
Since 1975, the breast cancer five-year relative survival rate has increased significantly!
In the most recent period, the five-year relative survival rate was 83 percent for black women and 92 percent for white women.
The overall five-year relative survival rate is 99 percent for localized disease, 86 percent for regional disease, and 30 percent for distant-stage disease.
