Special occasions call for something out of the ordinary.
It was Valentine’s Day in 2016 when Shelby Gambrell and Polo Gutierrez decided to try something new to celebrate the romantic evening. After a decade of being close friends with Jason and Jake Dady, and the brothers having attended and supported Polo when he coached at UTSA, the couple knew they wanted to return the favor by visiting one of the family’s many restaurants located throughout the Alamo City. Ultimately, Shelby and Polo decided on one of Chef Jason’s establishments that they had heard was spectacular: Tre Trattoria.
“It was one of the Dady restaurants we had not tried yet and heard it had a romantic setting,” Shelby said. “Jake was the chef that night and took great care of us by sending out extra special appetizers and dishes to try. Everything was fresh and tasty, but I remember the Pan Seared Gnocchi as being my favorite dish of the night."
Known as an innovative pioneer of San Antonio culinary culture, Chef Jason Dady’s Tuscan-inspired Italian fare features fresh house-made pasta, antipasti, salumi and signature cast-iron pizzas. Beverages include a wine list showcasing each region in Italy, while the signature hand-crafted cocktails offer exciting blends from the bar.
“What really sets Tre Trattoria apart from other San Antonio restaurants is the authentic menu and chef’s knowledge of pairing great flavors,” Shelby said. “The menu rotates seasonally but it’s tantalizing to the taste buds every time!”
Throughout the years, Shelby has sampled numerous dishes and fares but has a few all-time favorites. Her recommendations include the Signature Dish of Pan Seared Gnocchi with your choice of a creamy Gorgonzola or San Marzano Tomato, paired with the Barrel-Aged Old Fashioned to wash it down. For dessert, the Nutella x3 is a-must.
When asked what it is about Tre Trattoria that keeps them coming back, Shelby had this to say.
“The service, food quality and overall ambiance cannot be beat,” she said. “Additionally, the Alamo Heights location is quaint and intimate. With views of the mature trees, it creates a sophisticated and relaxing feel.”
While Tre Trattoria is going to be relocating in the future, the new location will not disappoint its patrons.
“I am looking forward to dining at their new location at the San Antonio Museum of Art in June 2018,” Shelby said, “They will be moving near the Pearl and the Riverwalk, which are two of the top attractions in the city!”
Though Tre Trattoria is one of Shelby and Polo’s favorites, they also recommend trying out Chef Dady’s other establishments.
